Municipal Services Bochum
The new offices of the Municipal Services are located on a prominent site in the city centre and occupy an entire city block. A five-storey boundary structure lends definition to the site and encloses a glass-covered, light-bathed courtyard which houses a customer service and information centre, while a 16-storey tower rises from the corner of the podium block and makes an elegant addition to the city’s skyline. A range of generous open office spaces are designed for flexible use and are designed to actively foster communication and teamwork. The building’s refined façade is composed of rhythmically alternating dark and transparent glazed elements and represents the first major application of Gatermann + Schossig’s pioneering integral façade system. The cladding panels incorporate both daylight deflecting louvres (which draw natural light deep into the heart of the building while protecting from excessive solar gain) and an integrated lighting system which frees the interior from the need for overhead lighting. Designed to achieve exemplary standards of energy efficiency, the building offers a 40% reduction on statutory requirements (EnEV) for primary energy consumption.
