Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF - Berlin
The new Federal Ministry of Education and Research completes the arch of the river Spree at a very prominent urban site. Facing the Spree, the Chancellery and the House of Representatives to the South, It borders to the North the heavily traveled elevated train tracks. From an urban design approach, the project seeks to enhance the alignment to the Spree, avoid locating offices to the train tracks in the North and to create equal workplaces adjacent to beautiful exteriors. Additionally, as Ministry of Education and Research, the building should signalize openness to both the outside and the inside. For this reason, a meandering plan shape was selected which, through the rhythm of the façade on the site edge interprets and corresponds with the alternating open and closed spaces of its urban environment, encloses the river Spree and creates an open internal arrangement. The glazed entrance hall underlines the theme of transparency by dividing itself in the public outdoor and the internal security domains which penetrates the building at riverside. Allocated along the three internal and two urban, green courtyards are special uses such as the canteen, bistro, conference areas, library and exhibition spaces so as to avail of stunning vistas of the city, the river and garden greenery.
